Adam WoodruffI am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Addiction Counselor. I was born and raised in New Mexico where I attended New Mexico State University and graduated with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice in 1992 and received a Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1997. I moved to Colorado that year and settled in Longmont, Colorado with my wife and now have two children. My wife and I have been married since 1995.

With experience as a therapist since 1997 in Longmont, Boulder, Ft. Collins and Denver, I have worked with adolescents, children, families, couples and individual adults facing a diverse set of challenges. Prior to relocating to Colorado, I worked with a variety of individuals from adolescents in foster care to adults living with disabilities. It was this work that fueled my desire to help people overcome the challenges they faced and to pursue a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. This field of study focuses special attention on the dynamics within families and between individuals that can give rise to psychological and relational challenges that all of us face throughout our lives. It is this unique perspective that has enabled me to gain an appreciation for the abundant resources that exist within individuals and families that has proven so helpful to the many people with whom I have been fortunate enough to work.

AAMFT Clinical MemeberI am a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). This organization has been integral in the development and expansion of the field that has been so helpful for countless families in our country. The AAMFT has also been a leader in its commitment to a very high standard of ethics to which I have gladly adopted for my own practice. See the Resources page for a link that will provide important resources for you.

What to expect in therapy:

You may choose to contact me via email and ask some questions about my qualifications and ability to help. I will happily take the time to answer your questions but would prefer to speak on the phone or in person. I often speak with people for a few minutes to assess the possible match for us in therapy. Things people often ask are: do I have openings; what are my hours of operation; do I have experience working with the issues you are facing; do I accept your insurance, etc. At your first appointment you can expect me to review your intake documents (see the Intake Forms page), ask questions relevant to establishing your needs, initial treatment goals and emotional/functional status. We will certainly have time to begin getting to know one another as the quality of this relationship is crucial in the overall potential helpfulness of therapy. I am often interested in knowing about past therapy experiences you may have had and what was beneficial or lacking. You can expect me to take considerable notes in the first session or two as I get to know your situation, background and needs. As I prefer to demonstrate my complete attention to you, I seldom take many notes during sessions after that. I occasionally may ask you to discuss how you think therapy is going. I always appreciate this type of exchange as it offers both of us a sense that we are collaborating and communicating in a manner most conducive to growth and success. I am here to help you and you can feel confident and comfortable knowing I will receive all feedback with objectivity, compassion and open-mindedness.

What if we begin therapy and it is not a good match?

In the event we get started and it falls short of being a comfortable and healthy fit, you may choose to seek out another therapist. I am aware that this happens and gladly offer support to people in their search. Please don’t ever hesitate to discuss your needs, goals, feelings about therapy and me as it comes up. This will ultimately prove valuable in finding the right match and resolving your issues in the most thorough and efficient manner.
